Emma was the daughter of Phillip and Marie (Baker) Ludwig.

Emma and her husband were the parents of 11 children: Mary (Mrs. Francis Pickel or Pickelle) George, Charles, Helen (Mrs Harry Tolbert), Carrie (Mrs. John Teesdale), Ruth (Mrs. Harry Raffensberger), Margaret (Mrs. Paul C Eckard), Herbert, Emma (Mrs. John H Rhoades), Pauline (Mrs. Dick Stake) and Edna (Mrs. Edward Guest).

She died in Philadelphia at the home of her daughter, Edna Evans Guest, with whom she lived. She had been ill for three years.
