Funeral service for Elmer Kilgore, age 98 of Chickasha, Oklahoma was held 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Chickasha.
Elmer Kilgore was born October 27, 1914 in Grady County and reared on a farm West of Minco by his parents Ulysses and Laura Kilgore. He died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at his home in Chickasha.
He and Nina Faye Talkington were married on August 5, 1945. They were married for 67 years. She preceded him in death in November 2012.
Elmer graduated from Minco High School and attended Hills Business College. He served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II and learned to fly small airplanes. Flying was something he loved and he kept his pilot's license until several years ago, during which time he taught others how to fly.
After he married Nina, they moved to Chickasha and owned their own business for a few years. When they sold the business, he worked for Tinker Air force Base and retired in 1976.
Elmer was a long time member of First Baptist Church. He started preaching as a young married man and preached many revivals and as pulpit supply for other preachers. Many people have been blessed by his weekly preaching on what is now KOOL 105 where he preached Sunday Mornings for almost 60 years.
Elmer was a master woodworker and made many beautiful pieces for family and friends, as well as for his church. He also enjoyed writing, especially poetry , both humorous and serious, most of which centered around either his family or his faith. In 2008, he won second place in the Oklahoma Conference on the Aging poetry competition, and earned an honorable mention award in that same competition the following year.
Another hobby, which he also turned into a ministry, was magic and ventriloquism. He started learning magic to entertain special education children in schools and churches, and even took this talent as far away as to a boys school deep in the jungles of Central America when on one of several mission trips there.
In 2000 he was named Honorary Lieutenant Governor by then Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma Mary Fallin.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and one great grandson Justin Daniel Rodriquez and son in law Charles Murdock.
Survivors include: four daughters: Stella Rawlings and Husband Mike of Oklahoma City, Carolyn Murdock of Shawnee, Laura Burton and husband Jess of Okmulgee, Jeannie Kilgore of Chickasha. Many Grandchildren including: Stephanie Rodriguez and husband Carlos, Charlotte Jones and husband Brayden, Christopher Murdock, Richard Murdock and wife Pam, Kirby Murdock and wife Peggy, Teila Rose Dye and Caleb Burton, Karen Bailey and Dave Burton and wife Nicole, and others, Many great grandchildren including: Bradley, Spencer, Ashley, Tamara Rodriguez, Dylan and Ethan West, Abby and Gunnar Jones, Christian and Zac Bailey , Landon Antoniono and Natalie Dye, and others and three great great grandchildren
Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery Chickasha, Oklahoma under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
