Bertha Schubert Campbell Houts passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, January 13, 2005, at Greenhills Village, Ferguson Township. She was just one month shy of her 95th birthday, having been born February 22, 1910 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of James Duncan and Amelia Augusta (Schubert) Campbell. Her father had been a guard at the Western State Penitentiary in Pittsburgh and was transferred in 1915 to the then-new Rockview Penitentiary in Centre County. Bertha, then 5, made the move with her birth family to Centre County at that time. She attended the old Hoy School in Benner Township. On March 6, 1928 at Boalsburg, she married Franklin Garbrick Houts who passed away April 16, 1973, Bertha loved her Lord and Savior and through the years had been a fervent prayer warrior on behalf of her children and extended family and friends. She enjoyed Bible study, listening to Christian radio broadcasts, and was selfless in contributing to missionaries and Christian workers over the years. She cherished the love and companionship of her many friends made during the more than 20 years that she lived in the Mount Nittany Residences, She is survived by her seven children, Dr. Richard F. (Janice) Houts, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Rev. Kenneth O. (Mabel) Houts, Westville, N.J.; Doris (Sherman) Weaver, Orange City, Fla.; Harry Dean Houts, State College; R. Fred (Amy) Houts, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; Donna (Philip) Bjalme, North Lauderdale, Fla., and Ricky David (Becky) Houts, Houserville; 21 grandchildren; 26 greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Richard (Evelyn) Kelleher, Bellefonte, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, four sisters and their husbands, and an infant brother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bellefonte from where funeral services were Monday, January 17, conducted by Rev. William Wessel. Interment at Shiloh Lutheran Cemetery. [Centre Daily]
