Funeral Services for Mr. Maurice Wayne Leland were held 11 A.M.Friday, June 20, 2008 at the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel in Washington, DC and a service was held at the Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home at 11 A. M.

On June 14, 2008, Mr. Maurice Wayne Leland, affectionately called by his middle name, Wayne, quietly departed this earth when God called him home. Born in Richmond, Virginia on March 21, 1952, he was the first born to Luther H. Leland and Evangeline Nickens Leland. In passing, Wayne leaves behind his father, Luther H. Leland, mother, Evangeline Leland; three brothers: Alvin L. Leland and wife, Kathy Leland; Larry C. Leland and wife, Ava Leland; and Joseph Leland; one sister, Sandra Y. Leland Green and husband, Grafton Green; four nieces: Nicole Green Rice, Alaina Leland, Brittany Leland; and Kayla Leland; four nephews: Daniel, Evan, Joshua, and Jared; three great nieces: Taylor Rice, Lauren Rice; and H'Iari Leland; one great nephew, Jordan Rice; Wayne also departed this life leaving a host of beloved friends, surrogate children, professional colleagues, and relatives.

Wayne was formerly educated in Lottsburg, Virginia in the public schools system. He began his education at Lottsburg Elementary School and graduated from Northumberland High School in 1970. Upon graduating he attended Hampton (Institute) University from 1970-1974, earning a Degree in Accounting. He began his employment at Howard University in 1974, in the office of the comptroller at the Howard University Hospital, where he served until June 30, 1981. He was then appointed to the position of Budget Assistant for the Armour J. Blackburn University Center. He was a loyal employee of Bloomingdales at White Flint Mall since August 22, 1978. Wayne enjoyed those things which are God's gift for beauty and peace, from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean to glaciers of the Pacific Ocean in Alaska; he enjoyed all types of music, especially jazz vocalist, Liz Wright; He always played spirituals and inspirational musical daily in his office. Wayne enjoyed being on the water, and athletically he had a passion for biking, and participated in the AIDS Ride from Washington, D.C. to North Carolina and back. Recently, he completed a fund raising ride locally. He enjoyed the theater, fine dining, concerts, and the company of good friends. Wayne enjoyed reading and discussing the books with others. The last books he was reading and studying was "A New Earth: Awakening to your Life's Purpose," by Eckhart Tolle. Being raised in a Christian family, he grew up attending the Zion Baptist Church in Lottsburg, Virginia. Wayne dedicated his life to Christ and attended Unity Church of Washington, D.C. Wayne was a giving, loyal, dedicated gentleman; "A True Servant Leader." He NEVER said NO, and all those who came in contact with him loved and respected him. He did not meet strangers and treated everyone as though he was always their friend He was a father figure to so many young people and students, a mentor and a friend to all. He was an exceptional employee and we are all the better individuals for having crossed paths with such a truly remarkable man. Interment services were held Saturday at the Zion Baptist Church in Lottsburg where his pall bearers and honorary pall bearers were: Samuel Amoaka Atta, Michael Cericola, Jason Douglas, Charles Gibbs, Keith Jenkins, Brian E. Lawson, Roy McKay, Jackie Miles, Bernard Moon, Terrance Samuels, and Marcus Ware. Floral Bears were friends and family. Services were provided by McGuire Funeral Home in Washington, D.C. and Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home in Lancaster, Virginia.
