GATE CITY, Va. Ella Sue Newton Hackler, 86, Gate City, VA, completed her earthly journey on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at NHC Health Care, Johnson City, TN.

Sue was born in Scott County, VA on July 3, 1926 to the late James Samuel and Myrtle Smith Newton. She graduated from Shoemaker High School and worked at Krisslees Department Store in Gate City for over 20 years.

She had been a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Gate City, VA before becoming a charter member of Community Fellowship Baptist Church. Before her illness she was active in the Philo Ladies Circle at Community Fellowship.

Prior to her declining health that began in late 2006/early 2007, she had been a volunteer at Natural Tunnel State Park, at the Christian Social Services Ministry in Duffield, VA; she was a longtime volunteer and once the Grand Marshall for the Mountain Empire Older Citizens Annual 10K Walk to raise money for the agencys emergency fuel fund for the elderly.

Sue served many years in various leadership roles for the Girl Scouts.

In addition to her parents, her husband of 62 years, Leo Hackler (2009) and her son, Michael Hackler (2009); brothers, Hubert Newton and Alfred Newton; sister, Kathleen Gothard; brother-in-law, Lee Gothard, Sr.; sister-in-law, Hazel Newton; and her nephew, Lee Gothard, Jr., preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Community Fellowship Baptist Church, Gate City, VA, 154 Broadwater Avenue (beside Gate City Vocational School). Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with Roy Newton and Rev. Odell Beauchamp officiating. Judy McConnell will provide the music.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 19, 2013 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Neil Hackler, Brandon Head, Robert Johnson, Sam Simon, Howard Gothard, Howard Osborne, Charles Sigmon, and Johnny Miller will serve as pallbearers.

Teresa would like to thank NHC Station 3, the Caris Hospice staff, and Dr. Ronald Hunter for their care of her mom through these years.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Community Fellowship Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1407, Gate City, VA 24251.
