John Smithson was reportedly the son of Thomas & Turkish Ann Smithson. A family bible shows he was born on 12 Apr 1727.

NC Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol 1, pg 488
Pasquotank, Nov 2d 1743, Jan'y Ct 1743 (father's will)
Thomas Smithson, Son Joshua, daughter Marion, sons Jacob and John, dau. Dorcas, daus. Mary Murden, Tammer Morris, wife Ann and son John Exrs. Test Richard Pritchard, Edmund Jackson

John had 7 siblings: Joshua, Joseph, Susannah, Meriam, Dorcas, Mary & Tamer.

Sometime before 1744 John married Dorothy Sawyer the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Sawyer.

The couple had 3-4 known known children:

1. Mary, m. Caleb Forbes, 4 ch
2. Marian, m. Bailey Forbes, ch Bailey
3. John Jr, 1767 NC - 1848 NC, 7 ch

While not as well documented some feel the 4th child was:

4. Reuben, 1750 NC - 1807 IN

A 1761 land record shows John owning 487 acres on the SW side of the Pasquotank River. A later (1777) record shows John buying Possum Quarter.

John's specific death date is unknown. In 1786 he bought 123 acres on the SW side of the Pasquotank. He was not found in the area censuses after 1790. A undocumented source shows his death as 19 Jan 1808. That date is in doubt but it is used here in absence of any other.

John's burial site is unknown. It was probably on family land in present day Camden County. Wooden markers were used during the time of his death and would not have lasted the test of time.
