Enlisted 16 June 1863 at Snicker's Gap, Va. as a Private and mustered into Co. "C", Virginia 2nd Cavalry, C.S.A. Wounded twice and became POW at Gettysburg 3 July 1863. Confined David's Island, N. Y. 15 July 1863 and exchanged 30 July 1863. One of his wounds was in the right temple causing the loss of his right eye which eventually resulted in his transfer to the Invalid Corps. Returned to his home and farm life near Scottsville. Married Frances Harrison Brown and they became the parents of six children.
