Donald C. Mote, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, passed away in his home on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Timothy Lee Mote and Donald Phillip Mote.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne Sparks Mote; his sons, Steve Mote and Larry Mote (Melanie); daughter-in-law, Lauren Mote; four granddaughters, Allison Mote Phillips (Jeff), Erica Mote Stone (Hunter), Sarah and Maddy Mote; two grandsons, Jason Mote (Jennifer) and Steven Mote; and three great grandchildren, Maria and Parker Mote and Emily Browning.

Don graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1951. He was employed for 39 years with South Central Bell and retired in 1987. During his retirement, he designed and built a state-of-the-art lake house on Lay Lake. In addition to building a vacation home for his friends and family to enjoy, he built many handcrafted birdhouses which he shared with all his friends. He also enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with his sons, grandsons, and friends. Don was ordained as a deacon at Emanuel Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama, and he was a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church in Vestavia Hills.

The family received friends at a visitation service on Thursday, September 1st, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel. The family will also receive friends on Friday, September 2nd, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at Shades Mountain Baptist Church beginning at 3:00 p.m. Burial will immediately follow at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be given in Don's honor to Glenwood Autism & Behavioral Center located at 150 Glenwood Lane, Birmingham, Alabama 35242.

The family would like to thank his nurse, Virginia Wallace, with Comfort Care Hospice Program. His wife, family, and friends will miss him dearly, but find peace in knowing that he is resting in the arms of his Lord and Savior. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (879-3401) in Homewood.
