Architect, Contractor, Alderman, best known for building lighthouses in US. Oversaw construction of CT's earliest lighthouses. Oldest surviving beacon built by Woodward- New London Harbor Lighthouse completed 1801. From New London Harbor Light can be seen the most lighthouses in the world. Several children born Preston, Connecticut, suggesting he lived there for some time. Owned extensive property in southern states, bought 4,000 acres in north Ohio, known as Firelands, to benefit widows and orphans of Revolutionary War soldiers. He served in 1776 Under Capt. James Morgan, in the Eight Regiment of Militia from the State of CT, Commanded by Oliver Smith, Lieut. Daniel Witter, Ensign Benj. Morgan, Ensign John Morgan, Sep 8th-Nov 9th, Gideon Woodward served with him. He died intestate, leaving widow, 5 sons, 5 daughters to divide his property. He had bought a house in 1790 from Edward Hallam, a large home on Main St, north of Hill St., New London, CT, never finished it in his or his children's lifetimes, was called "Woodward's Folly" by towns people. Father- Reuben Woodward 1727-1760, Mother- Martha Thompson 1734-1798, Married Mary Spicer 1752-1812 on 20 Mar 1774, New London, New London, CT.
