Dr. Jacob Snider TROUT, Sr. was born 28 Jun 1838 in Green Village, Franklin, PA, the son of Jacob TROUT (1797-1845) and Eloisa M. SNIDER (1805-1870).
In 1857, at the age of 19, young Jacob accompanied his oldest brother, Dr. William Fauber TROUT (1833-1899) to the Holy Land where he helped his brother practice medicine for two years and eight months in the ancient city of Damascus, Syria. The two returned to Chambersburg, Franklin, PA in 1859 and had then settled in McConnellsburg, Fulton, PA by 1860, where Jacob lived with and "read" medicine under Dr. Jacob Lewis Suesserott,Physician and Dentist (1829-1886). Jacob's older brother, Dr. William Fauber TROUT was also living in the household and practicing medicine.
With the coming of the Civil War, Jacob (24) enlisted on 05 Aug 1862 in Company "C", 126th Volunteer Pennsylvania Infantry, a 9-month regiment active from August 10, 1862 to May 20, 1863 and assigned to 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, V Corps in the Army of the Potomac. Jacob was formally mustered in at Camp Curtain four days later on 09 Aug 1862, and by vote of his company, elected Second Lieutenant. Jacob's unit arrived on Antietam Battlefield too late to participate, but then three months later, fought in the battle of Fredericksburg (Dec 11–15, 1862). After the battle, Jacob was placed in command of a detachment of thirty men on duty at the General Hospital, Stoneman's Switch on the US Military Railraod, Falmouth, VA from the 16 Jan -16 Mar 1863. The following month, his company again went into battle at Chancellorsville (April 30 - May 6, 1863) where his younger brother, Pvt. Nicholas Christopher Trout (1840-1863), a member of his company, was killed in battle on 3 May 1863. Jacob mustered out several weeks later on 29 May 1863 Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA after 9 months, 24 days service. As required by law, even though he had already served, Jacob registered for the draft in Jun 1863 at Dublin Twp, Fulton, PA. The ledger entry reports "age 25, Dentist, single, support of aged parent [mother Eloisa], previous service 126th PA Volunteers, 9 months."
After the war, Jacob returned to the practice of dentistry and in the 1870 census, he is found (single) living near Burnt Cabins, Fulton, PA, real estate value $8000 and personal estate $1000.
On 29 Jun 1870, the day after his 32nd birthday, Dr. Jacob Trout married Elizabeth C. Fore (1852-1902). At least (6) children were born to this union, Daniel Fore, 26 Apr 1871; Eloisa Mary, 10 Feb 1873; Elizabeth Fore, 23 Sep 1875; Harry Buchler, 21 Aug 1877; Jennie R. 1880, died as an infant; Jacob S. TROUT, Jr, 1882, also died as an infant.
By the time of the 1880 census, the family was living in Todd Twp, Fulton, PA where Jacob had turned to becoming a farmer.
Jacob died of pneumonia on 15 Mar 1883 at his home in McConnellsburg at age 44 years, 8 months, 15 days, and for some reason was buried without a stone first at McConnellsburg Presbyterian Cemetery (per Pennsylvania Veteran Burial Records), but was then moved to Union Cemetery where he shares a stone with his wife Elizabeth and their two youngest children, Jennie and Jacob, Jr.

Pennsylvania Veteran Burial Records report that he was first interred at McConnellsburg Presbyterian Cemetery, section P, Grave #9. Obviously, he was later re-buried in Union Cemetery.
