CAROL ARMSTRONG FRANKLAND (Age 88) Passed away peacefully Friday, April 12, 2013 in Jackson, Tennessee. She was a homemaker, schoolteacher, mother and wife. She was born in Jackson, Tennessee on July 11, 1924 to Alice Diffee Armstrong and James Clifford Armstrong, Sr. Carol graduated from Jackson High School in 1942 and went on to Judson College in Marion, Alabama where she was president of the student government association, a member of the Jane Jewett Honor Society, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, the Dean's list throughout her college career and by a vote of the College faculty the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award. She graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1946. Shortly after graduation, Carol married her high school sweetheart, Second Lieutenant Walter L. Frankland, Jr also of Jackson and a Class of 1946 graduate of the United States Military Academy. Thus began their life in the Army that would take them on assignments to Sasebo, Japan and Manhattan, Kansas where Carol taught school; West Point, New York, Paris, France and Washington DC. Carol and her family moved to Arlington, Virginia in 1964 where she was busy raising a family, volunteering with schools and in local Arlington County politics for almost 50 years. She returned to Jackson in 2012. Carol was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Diffee Armstrong and her father, James Clifford Armstrong, Sr.; her sister Betty Armstrong Lawrence and brother James Clifford Armstrong, Jr. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Lieutenant Colonel Walter L. Frankland, Jr USA (Ret.) of Jackson, Tennessee; beloved niece, Elizabeth Lawrence Gibson; her son, Lieutenant Colonel Walter L. Frankland, III USA (Ret.) and his wife Daun of Paris, France and daughter Mary Elizabeth Frankland of Palm Coast, Florida; grandchildren Leslie Veitch Frankland of Paris, France and John and Elizabeth Frankland of Palm Coast, Florida. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association . The family will receive friends on Sunday, 7 July from 4 to 6 p.m. at Arlington-Murphy Funeral Home. A service will be held in the Fort Myer Memorial Chapel on July 8, 2013 at 3 p.m. followed by interment at Arlington National Cemetery.
