Mrs. Mary Klein Hirschinger was born in Wittenburgh, Germany, April 12, 1849. She passed away at her home in Rock Valley, Iowa, June 12, 1929 at the age of 50 years and 2 months.

Her father died when she was but five years of age and at the age of six her mother came to this country with her family of six children, she having had five brothers. They arrived at New York in 1843 remaining there only a few months and then moved to Baraboa, Wisconsin, where the children were reared.

When Mrs. Hirschinger was 13 years of age her mother passed away leaving the young girl on her own resources, as three of her brothers were in the Civil War. The oldest being killed and another seriously wounded.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Jacob Hirschinger at Baraboa, Wisconsin, on January 29, 1872. To this union were born three children: Mrs. Mary Grossenburg, Charles, who died in infancy and Mrs. Lydia Smith.

The family moved to Rock Valley, Iowa, in 1887 where they have lived ever since. Mr. Hirschinger, having worked at the carpenter trade here.

All of the brothers having passed on before, she marked the closing of her generation of Kleins, a generation that always added glory and honor to their country and neighborhood. It was such people as those that have made this world and nation our pride and have given to their posterity our suppressed inheritance.

Her husband having preceded her in death 15 years ago, she leaves to mourn her memory, two children, Mabel Grossenburg of Rock Valley and Lydia Smith of West Alice, Wisconsin, formerly of Rock Valley and a step-son, Louis of West Alice, Wisconsin, eight grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and some twenty-five nieces and nephews.

When a young girl she became a member of the German Methodist Church at North Freedom, Wisconsin. She has always been a faithful member and a constant contributor to every worthy cause. She passed away as she had lived, peaceful, and loving to all who knew her and was a true friend and neighbor to all.
