In the 1880 census, 9-month-old Daisy was listed in the household of her father, 29-year-old James "Jim" H. Lewis along with her 22-year-old mother, Nancy Lewis and Daisy's brother, 4-year-old Elmer Lewis.

Daisy was married on Feb 12, 1899 to M. E. Hopkins in Jasper Co, Missouri. In the 1900 census 19-year-old Daisy Hopkins was living in the household of her father, James Lewis. The census said she had been married for 2 years but her husband was not living with her in 1900.

On Sept 7, 1903, Daisy Hopkins married James Shelby Hughes in Washita, Oklahoma. They were later divorced since James Hughes did not die until 1949.

Family lore states that Daisy's stepson, Robert Hughes, shot Daisy's father on September 1, 1910 and this may have been why Daisy and her husband separated. On December 12, 1910 Daisy Hughes married W. L. Swayzee in Jasper Co, Missouri.

On February 27, 1896 Daisy's brother, Elmer Lewis, was hung by an angry mob in Wichita Falls, Texas. Elmer Lewis and a cowboy turned outlaw, Foster Crawford, had robbed the City National Bank in Wichita Falls and a bank teller, Frank Mason Dorsey, was killed. Dorsey was well-liked in the community and was married with three children under age 10. Robberies in that part of Texas were not uncommon, and the citizens had had enough. A posse of townsmen led by Texas Rangers chased the robbers down and returned them to Wichita Falls, and after they were jailed, a crowd estimated at about 1000 gathered outside the jail. In spite of a judge, a prominent local attorney and another civic leader pleading for lawful justice to be done, the crowd moved into the jail. The sheriff was still on the way back from the scene of the capture, and the deputy sheriff, who was outside the jail cell, had no choice but to surrender the cell key. The robbers were then taken to a telephone pole outside the bank and were hung.
