Stephen Irwin, the son of Morton and Anna Crawford Irwin was born in 1816 near Darrtown in Butler County, Ohio and died in 1894 in Keokuk, Iowa. On December 2, 1841 in Butler County, Ohio Stephen married Elizabeth Martha Nichol (born 1820, died 1892), the daughter of John Nichol and Eleanor Marshall. In April 1856 Stephen and his wife Elizabeth moved from Butler County, Ohio to Keokuk, Iowa. That year Steven and his younger brother Sylvester established the Irwin Dry Goods Store which evolved into the successful Irwin, Phillips & Company. The Irwin-Phillips store, located for many years at the corner of Main and Third Streets in Keokuk, was a wholesale and retail dealer in dry goods and notions. Stephen's older son, John Nichol Irwin Name, assisted for a time with operations of the store prior to and sometimes during his (John's) extensive career in politics. Stephen's younger son, Wells Marshall Irwin, remained in Keokuk and was heavily involved in the management of Irwin Phillips Company.
Stephen was an avid reader. He was respected and admired throughout the Keokuk business community and was regarded among his peers as a man of superior financial ability and of modest deportment.
