US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Melvin Edward Liter enlisted in the Marine Corps 31 August, 1942 from Granger, Iowa. Qualified Rifle Sharpshooter and completed recruit training in the 6th Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA.

24 October, 1942 assigned to 8th Replacement Battalion, Training Command, Camp Elliott, CA. 29 October, 1943 assigned to Tank School, Training Command, MCB Camp Elliott, CA.

7 January, 1943 embarked the USS Lurline at San Diego for movement overseas. 23 January, 1943 arrived at Noumea, New Caledonia and embarked USS Rochambeau. Upon arrival at Melbourne, Australia assigned to D Company (Scout), 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Camp Balcombe, Victoria. Promoted to Private First Class.

27 September, 1943 embarked Liberty Ship SS Andrew D White at Melbourne. 8 October, 1943 at Milne Bay, New Guinea. 24 December, 1943 embarked Naval Transport at Milne Bay. 25 December, 1943 arrived at Cape Sudest, Oro Bay, New Guinea.

28 December, 1943 embarked Naval Transport at Oro Bay. 29 December, 1943 landed Blue Beach near Silimati Point, Cape Gloucester on New Britain and participated in combat operations until 25 April, 1944. Promoted to Corporal.

1 April, 1944 D Company (Scout), 1st Tank Battalion designated Recon Company, HQ Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

30 April, 1944 embarked USS Leedstown (APA-56) at Cape Gloucester, New Britain. 3 May, 1944 arrived at Pavuvu, Russell Islands. 1 July, 1944 promoted to Sergeant and assigned MOS 761 (Scout Sniper).

26 August, 1944 embarked Naval Transport. 28 August-4 September, 1944 at Tassaforanga Point, Guadalcanal. 15 September, 1944 landed at Peleiu on D-Day and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action during September, 1944.

Next of Kin: Mother, Mrs Cornelia A Dupree, Route One, Granger, Iowa.

Initially buried in USAF Cemetery Peleiu #1.

1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Granger, Iowa. Apparently he was buried in Beaver Catholic Cemetery in Granger but is also memorialized on a gravestone in Oakwood Cemetery also located in Granger.
