JOPLIN, Mo. — Mary Ellen Topper, 61, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at her residence after a sudden illness.
Mary entered this life on Aug. 20, 1951, in Siloam Springs, Ark., born to the union of the late William Clark and Mable (Smith) Baker. She has been a resident of Joplin since the age of 5.
On Jan. 18, 1974, she was united in marriage to Robert Topper Sr. and together they have shared the last 39 years. Besides being a devoted homemaker she also worked in home healthcare for Independent Living. She enjoyed camping, fishing and cherished each moment spent with her family. She was a member of the Miracle Valley Church in Galena, Kan.
Mary is survived by her husband, Robert Topper Sr., of the home; five sons, Bill Topper, of Quapaw, Okla., Robert Topper Jr., of Carthage, Mo., Jerry Topper, Scott Smith and Gary Smith, all of Joplin; two daughters, Virginia Gourley, of Joplin, and Linda Poindexter, of Memphis, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Raymond Baker, of Joplin, Bill Baker, of Kansas City, Kan., and Randy Baker, of Joplin; a sister, Joyce Monteer, of Edwards, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Graveside funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin, with Pastor Francis R. Chew Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday morning from 10 until 10:45 a.m. in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin.
