Mr. Edward Sarsnett died at his residence on Ontario Street, Sunday evening, in the forty-second year of his age. He was born in the year 1842, in Virginia, where the early part of his life was spent. He enlisted in the Fourteenth Regiment of Rhode Island Heavy Artillery, and was appointed Sargeant of Company K, on the 17th day of Febuary 1884, he was formerly connected with tho (sic) Nt.Y.C.R.R. at this place, and leaves a wife and a large number of friends to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place from St. Peter's church at four o'clock this afternoon, after which the remains will be interred, in Oakwood cemetery.

Oakwood Cemetery submitted paperwork to replace the worn headstone with a new granite marker. The application was approved on 6/25/2013 making Sgt. Sarsnett our first Oakwood Cemetery Civil War vet to get a new marker. Stay tuned for photos...
UPDATE 9/2014: Oakwood Cemetery volunteer G. Ladouceur applied for and received a replacement headstone for Civil War USCT soldier, Sgt. Sarsnett. Marker was set in Sept. 2014 with costs absorbed by Oakwood Cemetery. The new designation on the headstone, USCHA, stands for "United States Colored Heavy Artillery".
