My great-great grandfather was born on September 30, probably in 1877, in Yancey County, North Carolina, to Bert and Sara Hensley, who (though they were born in North Carolina and Tennessee) had roots in Holland and Ireland, respectively. When the children were very young, Lovada disappeared, and her fate is unknown. Stephen's parents, Bert and Sara, moved in to help raise the children. Bert died in 1917, and the children were mainly raised by their father and their Grandma Hensley.
Stephen died on May 7, 1928 from food poisoning brought on by eating wild ramps. He passed away, and is buried in, Mars Hill, North Carolina.
