La Verna E. Slagle, 82, died at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at York Hospital. She was the wife of Ervin L. Slagle. La Verna and Ervin observed their 62nd wedding anniversary on November 27, 2004. Born January 12, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Susan C. (Myers) Wire. Mrs. Slagle worked at the former Christensen Steel Company for over 40 years as a bookkeeper, office manager and in 1973 became a co-owner of the company. In 1982 she retired as the secretary treasurer of the company due to the sale of the business to L.B. Foster Company of Pittsburgh. She is listed in the Who's Who of American Business Women. She was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ and the County Club of York. She was a 1941 graduate of William Penn Sr. High School. Funeral Friday, July 1, 2005, at Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, York, Rev. Andrew W. Russell, Chaplain of the York Lutheran Homes, officiating. Burial in Mount Rose Cemetery.
