The Fairbury Journal-Dec. 18, 1962
Earl Edgar Ackley, the second of five sons of Jay and Lillian Ackley, was born April 6, 1887 in Athens, Ohio, and died in Fairbury, Neb., Dec. 11, 1962, at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 5 days.
Following the death of his father, when Earl was seven years of age, he was placed with a farm family near town, but grew homesick for his sister and four brothers and returned to his home. He attended school until about 13 years of age, when he came to Nebraska, and lived with an uncle, Elza McPherson of Fairbury, and attended school. Later he decided to move toward the West, where he worked on cattle ranches and became a cowboy.
On Nov. 22, 1916 he married Mrs. Leota Richardson in Pocatello, Idaho and they settled on his homestead south of American Falls, Idaho. Later they returned to Fairbury where he worked for the Rock Isalnd (sic) railroad. In 1940 he was transferred to Chicago, where the couple lived the next 15 years. After retiring from the railroad, he and Mrs. Ackley returned to Nebraska and have since made their home in Fairbury.
Mr. Ackley started attending the Foursquare church soon after it was established in Fairbury in March, 1931, and soon became a faithful member.
Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and four step-sons.
Surviving are his wife, Leota of 719 D street, Fairbury; brother Vern Ackley of Athens, Ohio; sister, Mrs. Irene Stanert of Sartell, Minn., four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were Sunday afternoon in the Foursquare church with the pastor, Rev. H. L. Hoover, officiating. Mrs. Bonnie Tamerius was soloist and Mrs. Gerald Canning, organist. Burial was in the Fairbury cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gerald Canning, Roger McGinty, E. A. Mewes, Herbert Kujath, Edward "Bob" Meyer and Lowell Thrasher.
