Member of Captain William S. Mudgett's Co B, 2nd regt Infantry, ME Volunteers. He enlisted as a single man of 19 yrs from Stockton Springs, rank of private, enlisted at Bangor, Maine 25 Apr 1861, mustered in 28 May 1861 at Willett's Point, NY, Remarks in 1862 Adjutant General's Report show 'Wd at Manassas; in hospital', Remarks in 1863 Report show 'Disc for disability April 27 (1863)'.

William lost a leg in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run. That battle known to have taken place August 28-30, 1862.

Mr. Ellis took a second enlistment in the 'Invalid Corps' at Belfast, Maine, on 16 Aug 1863. His enlistment contract notes that his enlistment satisfied one of the Draft Quota for the Town of Stockton Springs. It has been lost to time when this enlistment ended.
