Norma Pearl (Kottsick) Johnson, 96, of Minot and formerly Garrison, died Wednesday, July 10 2013 in Trinity Hospital surrounded by family.
Born May 22, 1917 in Mandan, ND to George and Cora (Henninger) Kottsick, Norma's family moved to Minot in 1923. She was a graduate of Minot High School and in 1939 married Edwin Johnson. Together they raised three daughters, Janice, Elizabeth, and Marlene.
Norma was known to all as a hardworking, "feisty" woman. She was extremely proud of her career with Farme's Union where she started picking turkeys during the Depression, eventually working her way into the office as a billing clerk. Able to balance her career with raising her family, Norma was also a troop leader for the Girl Scouts, a position she enjoyed and continued long after her daughters were through the program.
In 1977 Norma and Ed retired to Douglas Bay on Lake Sakakawea where they enjoyed many happy years entertaining family and friends. Following Ed's passing in 1995, Norma continued to maintain their lake residence well into her eighties, passing her time with the work of keeping a rural home, gardening, quilting and embroidering. Several of her quilts were donated to Camp of the Cross where they were considered the "prize" of the Camp's annual quilt auction.
In her later years she continued to spend time at Douglas Bay while also living for periods with each of her daughters. In 2011 she moved to the retirement wing of Trinity Homes where she continued to maintain her independence under the watchful eye of their supportive, loving staff and community.
Norma was known as "lucky" at games, and whether enjoying a day at the casino or playing Bingo, she always played with a winner's confidence, an attitude that undoubtedly led to her "luck". A lifetime supporter of education, Norma was also extremely proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Norma is survived by her daughters: Elizabeth (Dennis) Wolsky, Minot, and Marlene McCann, Omaha, NE; sisters: Ruth Weber, Minot, Jackie (Donny) King, Fargo; brother: Quentin (Carol) Kottsick, Onamia, MN; son-in-law: Charles Larson, Garrison; grandchildren: Sue (Tim) Kleppe of Gulf Breeze, FL; Todd (Marci) Larson of Garrison, Chad (Kirsten) Wolsky of Minot, Kasha (Stacey) Diehl of Minot, Josh Wolsky of Minot, Sean McCann of Lubbock, TX, and Kevin (Ann) McCann of Omaha; 20 great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, George and Cora Kottsick, her husband, Ed, daughter, Janice, son-in-law, Pat McCann, sisters: Viola Graff, Evelyn Zick, and Grace Otto; and brothers: Robert and Virgil Kottsick.
