James W. Crane was born on October 4, 1872 in Benton, Missouri, to Peter Romine and Emily Sharp Crane. He was one of six children born to Peter and Emily. James W. Crane married Lydia Ann Pence March 3, 1892 in Ozark, Missouri. James and Lydia had seven children, six sons, and one daughter. During their marriage, they lived in Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, and finally located in California. James was living in Los Angeles County, at the time of his death. He died April 27, 1962 from Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but had been hit by an automobile while walking as a pedestrian 2 months prior to his death. James died at the age of 89.

He was Laid to Rest in Montecito Memorial Park on May 1, 1962
