Born in Clausthal, Hanover, Niedersachsen, Germany, the son of Johann Carl & Johanne Wilhelmine (Holling) Schindler, he emigrated in 1853. He married Maggie Young but she died in 1858. He then married Sophia Seifert. in 1860, he wa presumably living somewhere in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lykens, Dauphin County, April 26, 1861, and mustered into federal service that same day in Harrisburg as a private with Co. F, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1861. During that time he suffered illness for six weeks, and when he tried to re-enlist for a three-year term was rejected for that reason.

Sophia died in 1867, and he married widow Sophia C. Snyder, née Schloimone, July 20, 1867, in Wiconisco, Dauphin County. No children from any marriage survived their father. His cause of death is listed as "disease of heart."
