Dawn graduated from Sexton High School in 1956. She met her husband, Tom Beachnau, at the drive-in restaurant her parents owned, Nip and Sip. She was a carhop and he was a dishwasher. She was also the silent partner in her son's business, Great Lakes Incentives, LLC. During her career she received numerous awards for her contributions to the Law Review and to Cooley Law School. She was a long time member of the Lansing Legal Secretaries' Association, and was named "Legal Secretary of the Year" in 1982. She was a member of Holy Cross, St. Gerard, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Mary Cathedral, where she served on the Altar Society, (holding every office including multiple times as president) and Parish Council. She loved dining out, especially at the Lansing Country Club with her son Tommy.
