Born at Polichov, near Nakel, in Province Posen. At the time of his birth, Posen was part of the German Empire. After WWII, this area was ceded to Poland. Although baptized "Friedrich Ernst Zempel," he chose to use his middle name of "Ernst" as his first name, and in later years he adopted the updated version of "Ernest" and used "Ernest Fred" as his name.

He arrived in the USA on 27 March 1875 aboard the SS Oder with his parents and family. An older brother and sister preceded the family several years earlier. They settled in the Little Creek neighborhood in the northeast corner of Little Wolf Township in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

He became a naturalized US citizen in June 1913.

He married Ida Pidde in 1880 and they farmed in Little Wolf Township just outside the southern village border of Manawa. Ernest and Ida raised five children: Leo, Herbert, Erna, Carl, and Robert. Ida passed away on 20 July 1927 and Ernest died on 27 October 1930.

The spelling of Zempel on the larger monument reflects Ernest's insistence that the original German version of the family name be preserved. His oldest son, Leo, changed the spelling from "el" to "le" around 1910 to Americanize the name. Leo's sister, Erna (later Handrich), and his brothers Herbert, Carl, and Robert all adopted that newer spelling, although their father did not agree with the change. Other Zempel families from the same region in Posen generally retained the "Zempel" spelling, but Ernest's "Zemple" children from Manawa did not.
