"MR. HAVANA" DARREL HILST SUCCUMBS AFTER LONG ILLNESS

During his 79 year career, Darrel Hilst had a wide variety of jobs and titles, but none he wore more proudly than "Mr. Havana". Hilst received the nickname in 1989 at the ribbon cutting of the Havana Wagner Castings Plant by plant manager Dean Buckley.

Hilst died at 3:25 a.m., Friday, July 29, 2005 at Havana Health Care Center at the age of 79.

He was born January 16, 1926 in Manito to William and Thelma Clauser Hilst. He married Judith Konnecker on June 29, 1958 in Carlinville,, IL.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Stanley (Pilar) Hilst of Clive, IA; two daughters, Doretta (Richard) Irwin of Bloomington and Yvonne Hilst of New York, NY; five grandchildren, Vanessa and Enrique Hilst; Mary Judith, Julia and Michele Irwin; and one brother, Beryl (Nora Mae) Hilst of Manito.

Cremation will be accorded and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Community United Methodist Church in Manito. The Rev. Robert Smith will officiate. Private burial of ashes will take place at a later date. No visitation is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church of Havana, the Havana Optimist Scholarship Fund or to Community United Methodist Church in Manito.

Maas Funeral Home in Manito is handling arrangements.
