Funeral services for Raymond Charles Sowell Sr., 89, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at St. Luke United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ben and Dora Gafford officiated with burial in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Mr. Sowell died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002. Born in Chesterfield County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Watkins Sowell. He was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible class. He also was a member of the Hartsville Masonic Lodge #173 and the Eastern Star Chapter #91. He was retired from Sonoco Products Company with 40 years of service and was a member of the Sonoco Old Timers Club and Sonoco Fireman's Club.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Katie Peele Sowell of Hartsville; and son, Dr. Raymond C. Sowell Jr. of Garden City Beach.
