Freeville: Joyce I. Woodard, 78, of Bone Plain Road, Freeville, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the Groton Nursing Facility. Joyce was born January 28, 1934 in Schenevus, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Agnes I. (Stetson) Alcott, and had been a Freeville resident for over 60 years. A devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, Joyce had also co-owned and operated, along with her husband Philip, the former Groton Western Auto Store from 1978 to 1999. She enjoyed outdoor gardening, tending to many houseplants and African violets, reading, and caring for numerous family pets throughout her life. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Philip C. Woodard; four daughters, Dolores (Tom) Pendell of Freeville, Barbara (Dan) Hunt of Williamsville, Diana (Tom) Drake of Freeville, and Debbie (Chris) Fox of Cortland; ten grandchildren: Mark Pendell, Julie Lewis, Heather Paluch, Amiee Williams, Alicia Caswell, Hilary Chandler, Amanda, Danielle, Daniel and Jared Fox; six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Sandra Snowberger, in 1989. A funeral service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 9 at the Shurtleff Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Neno officiating. Private interment will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends may call at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton on Thursday from 4-5:30 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Freeville Volunteer Fire Department.
