William A. Smith was a harness maker by trade, which served him well during his active duty years during the U.S. Civil War. William enlisted in Company B of the Massachusetts 16th Infantry at the rank of Private. William mustered out in of Company B in 1862 and enlisted in Company H of the Massachusetts 6th Infantry attaining the rank of First Lieutenant, where he mustered out in 1863. William completed his Civil War duties in the Massachusetts 7th Light Artillery Battery by enlisting in 1863. He mustered out in 1865 at Galloup's Island, Boston, Massachusetts.
Prior to his Civil War duties, William was united in marriage to Caroline Bangs, one of the daughters of Knowles Bangs and Abigail Clark, on March 27, 1853 in Freedom, Maine. Walter and Caroline were blessed with the birth of at least two children during their marriage:

William passed away at the young age of 54 by drowning, according to his death record. His wife Caroline passed away three years later of cancer.
