Mrs. Martha J. Gates married Charles A. Sumner on November 2, 1870 in Burlington, Vermont. (announcement)

Martha's will provided for the Stephen Gates scholarship, to be awarded to to "some poor and deserving student in the (Burlington) high school", with preference given to a girl or boy from Westford, Vermont. She also left a 5 acre parcel of land on Williston Road to the Home for Friendless Women, $300 to be used to care for the family lot in Elmwood Cemetery, and property on Cedar Beach (Charlotte, VT) and the family homestead on Elmwood Avenue in Burlington to family members.
