Roland E. Spofford
(March 10, 1921 - February 5, 2011)

Haverhill – Roland E. Spofford, Sr. (Age 89), commonly known as "Rollie" or "Ponzi", died Saturday, February 05, 2011 at Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, Massachusetts surrounded by family members.

Born in Georgetown, March 10, 1921, he was the son of Harold M. and Helen (Brockelbank) Spofford and a 10th generation descendant of John Spofford, noted to have been Georgetowns first permanent settler and Captain Samuel Brockelbank another of Georgetowns early settlers, noted to have constructed the building which now houses the Georgetown Historical Society. Roland was extremely proud of his English heritage.

He was raised and educated in Georgetown and graduated from Perley High School in 1940. He played soccer, basketball and baseball. As a pitcher on the 1940 championship team, he established a record for striking out opposing batters, fanning 112 in 56 innings, a record that still stands.

He enjoyed playing pool, horseshoes and candlepin bowling and was the owner/operator of Georgetown Lanes for 10 years. He was an avid stock car racing fan and, although he visited many of the larger racing facilities including Indianapolis and Daytona, he still preferred short track racing in New England and New York. He loved music, had a great sense of humor and at times could be very sentimental.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served on the battleship U.S.S. Arkansas in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre as well as in the American Theatre aboard the U.S.S. SC1058 and several shore assignments. He was a member of the Georgetown V.F.W.

Following his discharge from the U.S. Navy, his first permanent job was a dealer for the Cushman Bakery of Lynn, Ma., serving communities in Southern N.H. and eventually the towns of Georgetown, Rowley and Byfield. In January of 1958, he became an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company and ultimately became an insurance broker and Registered Representative, serving many companies, ultimately retiring from John Hancock.

During his retirement years he became interested in antique cars and enjoyed attending many car shows with his prized, fully restored, fire engine red 1967 Chevy El Camino. He also enjoyed playing bingo and took several bingo cruises in recent years. He often could be found attending his beloved grandchildren's activities, particularly sporting events.

He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 61 years, Barbara (Poole) Spofford, his parents and lifelong idol and hero, his brother, H. Bertram Spofford.

He is survived by two daughters, Jean Jovell and her husband James of Georgetown, Joni Ouellette and her husband Kenneth of Salem, N.H., two sons, Roland E. Spofford, Jr. and his late wife Katherine of Georgetown and Philip M. Spofford and his wife Blair of So. Hamilton, MA.; nine grandchildren, Shannon Bakiu and her husband Emin of So. Burlington, VT., Joseph Jovell and his wife Kristi of Attleboro, MA., Jenny Palladino and her husband G. Michael of Salem, MA., David Spofford and his wife Colleen of Worcester, MA., Jillian Spofford and Matthew Spofford of Haverhill, MA., Nicholas Spofford of So. He also leaves his loving and caring companion, Margaret Pfifferling of Haverhill and her family who have been so helpful and supportive, John Pfifferling and his wife Pam, Mike Pfifferling and his wife Jen, Deborah and Joel Conner and Donna and Thomas Mackie.

Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 pm at the Merton E. Roberts Jr and Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant street, Georgetown, MA 01833.
