Mrs. John B. Clayton Jr., civic leader, church worker and member of a pioneer family, died Sunday in a Greenville hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Clayton is said to have suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.

The daughter of the late W.M. McBride, former prominent Greenville dry goods merchant, and Jane Martin McBride, Helen Clayton was born Feb. 22, 1901, in Greenville.

Educated in the Greenville schools, Mrs. Clayton attended TSCW, now known as Texas Woman's University, Denton, and fashionable Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. She was married to Mr. Clayton on January 11, 1921 and for many years they had resided at 2706 Oneal.

SERVICES

Mrs. Clayton was active in civic and church work. She was a member of the Women's Guild of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and of the Garden Study Club where she had served on various important committees. She had been especially interested in many of the beautification programs.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Monday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. J.Dean Maurer, Commerce, officiating. Burial was in Forest Park cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tilford Collins, Lloyd Deaton, Harry Herlocker, Jack Mason, Jess Norton, Paul Mathews, R.D. Trimble, G.L. Burnett, Dr. Joe Becton and Ben Bailey.

The James-Coker-Peters Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are her husband, John B. Clayton Jr.; one son, John B. Clayton III, Dallas; two daughters, Mrs. Frank W. Cushing Jr., Waco, and Mrs. A.T. Seymour III, Fort Worth; a sister, Mrs. A.A. McNeill, Valley Mills, a brother-in-law, Harold Clayton; sister-in-law, Mrs. John A. Scarborough, Paris, and six grandchildren.
