Edward J. Armstrong, 88, of Endwell, passed away peacefully May 4, 2010 surrounded by his loving wife and family.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Theresa; a brother, Tom and a sister, Jody Monico and two grandchildren, James Armstrong and Mary Elizabeth Barr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Ruth (Coleman), six daughters, Mary Kay (AJ) Barr, Ellen (Dave) Samuelson, Ann Brhel, Susan (Robert) Sedlacek, Peggy (Gene) George, Charissa (Dennis) Vickery and three sons, Joe (Bernadine) Armstrong, Jack (Terri) Armstrong and Jim (Laura) Armstrong and 41 grandchildren and two great granddaughters; a brother, Jack; two sisters, Evelyn (Ray) Salani and Rita Wishengrad; a brother-in-law, John (Marcy) Monico and three sisters-in-law, Helen Lee, Katie Walker and Peggy Armstrong and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Ed graduated from Binghamton Central High School where he was a football standout. He then attended St. Lawrence University on academic and athletic scholarships. During his second year he joined the Navy where he was sent to Northwestern University graduating as a Lieutenant. He served in the Pacific Theater in WWII on the LST 621 that took him to many islands including Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Ed returned home after the war as an executive officer and graduated with honors from St. Lawrence in 1947. He began his career as a chemical engineer with Inter Chemical in Newark, NJ and furthered his education receiving a Masters Degree in Chemistry from Stevens Institute of Technology. He moved to Endwell to take a position with IBM where he retired after 29 years of service. After retiring, he spent much of his time volunteering in the community. Ed, a daily communicant, was one of the founders of Christ the King School and Our Lady of Angels Church.
He was the first Lector, one of the original six commissioned as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Angels Parish, a member of the Parish Council and Holy Name Society. As one of the founders of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel, he spent many hours there.
Ed enjoyed his annual WW II LST reunions, was an athlete and sports fan, had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed life and people, and had a special place in his heart for little children.
Ed cherished his wife, family, church and country.
We want to thank all the doctors and nurses at Lourdes and all the wonderful Hospice providers who were so kind and good to Ed.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 am at the Allen memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 am from the Church of the Holy Family.
Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Friendsville, PA at 4 pm.
The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Friday from 4-8 pm, with recitation of the Rosary at 3:30 pm.
