The son of John George & Eva (Hoover or Huber) Wherley, he married Sarah M. Bortner and fathered Mantilla (b. 04/26/41 or 44 - married a Lefever), Edward (b. @1845), Cassie Ann (b. 10/19/46 - married Charles Warfel), Sarah Ann (b. 09/06/48 - married John B. Smith), Abdiel (b. @1850), Levina (b. @1848), Noah B, (b. 03/29/54), Joshua (b. @1856), Milton Ambrose (b. 01/??/60), and Malinda Jane (b. 12/17/60 - married Amos H. Nonemaker). In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of forty-three in York County November 9, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 11 as a private with Co. K, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York.

He served as county commissioner and for thirty years as a justice of the peace. In 1890, he was living in Glen Rock, York County, but died at his home in New Freedom.
