GOODMAN, Dr. John Louis Passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013 in his home in Wellesley, surrounded by family and friends. He was born April 5, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Dr. Louis E. Goodman, an oncologist and surgeon, and Lois W. Goodman, a pianist and nurse who worked in her husband's office. Dr. Goodman graduated from Hamilton College in 1966 with a major in French. He spent his junior year abroad in Paris at the Sorbonne. Before matriculating at Boston University School of Medicine, he spent four years pursuing other interests. He attended one year of law school at University of Maryland, taught two years of high school and middle school French, and completed one year toward a PhD in Romance Languages at University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley at the height of the 60s counterculture movement, he?decided to pursue his longstanding interest in psychiatry. Dr. Goodman graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1974. He completed his residency in adult psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center and his fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Boston Children's Hospital. Dr. Goodman opened a private practice with Dedham Medical Associates in 1978 and moved his office to Needham in 2001. He was a beloved doctor who remained committed to offering both psychopharmacology and psychotherapy to a wide spectrum of patients. He continued to practice full time for three and a half years after his cancer diagnosis and retired in June 2013 after 35 years. Dr. Goodman was an avid reader, a music lover, a friend to all who knew him, and first and foremost, devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of forty years, Dr. Lois Goodman, a gynecologist in Weston, his daughters Amy Goodman Kass and Jeanne Goodman, both of Brooklyn, New York, two sons-in-law, four beloved grandchildren, his brother Tom Goodman, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and his mother. A Memorial Service will be held at Temple Beth Elohim, 10 Bethel Road, Wellesley on Tuesday, July 16 at 10:00 am. Immediately following the service, family and friends are welcome at the Goodman family home in Wellesley until 5:00 pm, continuing on Wednesday?and Thursday 2-4pm?&?7-9 pm. Please omit flowers. Memorial donations may be made to The Louis E. Goodman MD Award, a prize established by Dr. Goodman's father in the months before his death from cancer in 1987. The prize is designed to encourage pre-medical students at Johns Hopkins University to pursue their interests in the arts and letters for personal enrichment and to help make them more well-rounded compassionate physicians.
