Born about 1725 in Newcastle County, Delaware (then part of the lower counties of Pennsylvania) James removed, with his father, to Chester County, Pennsylvania about 1737 when he was about 12 years of age. On January 25, 1751 at Old Swede's Church in Wilmington, Delaware, he was married to Margaret Jane Sharp.
