HALL, Leon Mathis

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 25th 2:00pm at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation to celebrate the life of Leon Hall, 91, who died peacefully July 15th at his Davis home.
Leon, a retired civil engineer, lived with his family in Davis for nearly 40 years. He was born in Hurricane, Utah in 1922 to Hannah and Harvey Hall. As a child he helped with his family ranch, often guiding cattle on trips across the state of Utah.
After a short stint in college, Leon joined the United States Air Force where he served as an intelligence draftsman assigned to a P57 squadron, flying missions over France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during World War II. From 1943 until the war ended in 1945, he served in this role.
Upon his return to the States, Leon went back to College and graduated from the University of Utah with an engineering degree. He soon was hired by the State of California, where he worked for several different departments, most notably Bay Toll Crossing and the Department of Water Resources, until his retirement and even beyond. He played a key role in several water projects up and down the state, including the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, the Oroville Dam and the California Aqueduct.
After retirement Leon and his wife Phyllis enjoyed many spectacular vacations, including cruises in Scandinavia, the Greek Islands, Alaska, the Panama Canal, Cape Horne, Australia and more. When in town, he was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation and a frequent customer of local coffee shops and restaurants where he loved to debate current events with a variety of family members and friends.
Leon is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Phyllis, and daughters Marsha (Steve) Street and, Melody (David) Yeates of Westwood, Stephanie Hall of Davis and sons Robert Hall of Sacramento, David Hall of Vallejo and Tom (Laura) Hall of Davis; his sister, Lena (Jim) Robertson of Stockton and his brothers Victor (Louise) Hall and Emerson (Norma) Hall, both of Hurricane, Utah. His grandchildren Rose Burns of Davis, Willie and Katie Hall of Davis, Leif Velasco, Quinn and, Taylor Street , Laraika Gibbs, Adria Butler, Leah Gomez, Hannah Lin and, Josh Yeates.
