DeWitt "De" Corry was one of eight children born to Frederick Garlough "Fred" Corry and his wife Cleopatra Fern "Cleo" Preston Corry.

The children, in order from oldest to youngest, were: Preston, DeWitt, Chester, Donna, Mary, Barbara, Theresa, and Eleanor.

After high school, De worked for a while on oil tankers just off the California coast. At some point his parents and some siblings moved back to Ohio. De was old enough to stay in California, but he went with the family, apparently to help his father take care of De's severely disabled brother Chester Eugene Corry, nicknamed Bunny.

On December 22, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, De enlisted in the U.S. Army.

He became paralyzed below his waist when he was shot in Italy in 1944 during World War II. During his recovery, he met his future wife, Margaret Mary "Marge" Parker, a registered nurse, at the Vaughan Veterans' Hospital, in Hines, Illinois, which is just west of Chicago. That hospital still exists, but it is now named the Edward Hines, Jr. V.A. Hospital, at 5000 S. 5th Ave., Hines, Illinois.

De and Marge were married October 21, 1947 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, in Adell, Wisconsin. That church was five miles west of the Parker family farm.

The couple moved to southern California. They adopted a son, Michael Robert Corry, and a daughter, Patricia Mary Corry.

De spent some time working for Howard Hughes' company. Hughes made it a point to hire disabled veterans. De also worked on wristwatches in his home.

Because of his war injuries, De spent the last 54 years of his life in a wheelchair. He lived 20 years after his wonderful wife Marge died at the young age of 57, of cancer.
