John N. Armstrong was a 38 year old resident of Calhoun County, Michigan when he enlisted as a Private on September 9, 1861. His enlistment place was Burlington, Michigan. Five days later, he was mustered into Company E of the 1st Michigan Infantry (most likely at Ann Arbor, Michigan). He re-enlisted on February 17, 1864. As a rank and file soldier of this regiment, Armstrong would have participated in the many chief battles that raged in Virginia during the war. The 1st MI was also at Gettysburg. He is listed as being mustered out on July 9, 1865 at Jeffersonville or Jacksonville, Indiana. He applied for a pension from the District of Columbia on October 18, 1881. Interesting enough, his wife Susan R. (she’s on FAG too) wasted no time after his death to file for a pension benefit. She filed on February 25, 1897, a mere 9 days after his death.
