Chemist, professor in Jena. Well known for the "Doebereiner's Triads", a milestone on the way to the periodic system of elements. He also detected the catalytic effect of platinium. Goethe drew inspiration from his theory of chemical affinities for his novella "Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities)".
