Ellen Lanphere was born December 4, 1891 in Mayport, Duval, Florida while her father was working as a commercial fisherman in Florida. She spent most of her life as a switchboard operator for the AT&T company in Westerly, Rhode Island. Many years after retiring, she started a new business at the age of 75. She operated an answering service from her home and ultimately became a major provider of paging service for the area. She also became the primary emergency dispatch and alarm service for the volunteer fire departments in southern Rhode Island and parts of Connecticut. Ellen died in 1993, just shy of her 102nd birthday.
