AKA Cummings. The State of Ohio Veteran Grave Registration Card, compiled during the Great Depression of the 1930s as a Works Progress Administration project, reads "Joseph A. Cummings," but the Woodland Cemetery Foundation Interment Information Systems reads, "James A. Cummings" who enlisted in the 40th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry, September 1, 1862, during the Civil War. He served in Company C and was mustered out September 25, 1889. The real difficulty in definitely identifying him is that his headstone is badly weathered and completely illegible.

He can't be found in any U.S. Census listing in either Massachusetts or Ohio. No pension applications can be found for him. At the time of his death from heart disease he resided at 126 River Street, Cleveland, Ohio. He was buried in a plot set aside for Civil War veterans in Section 72 at Woodland Cemetery, September 25, 1889. Nothing more is known about him.Record Number: 024400 Interment Number: 24352
