He was the founder of the prestigious New York agency Elite Models, the world's best-known modeling agency group, in 1972, and was one of the biggest names in fashion and discoverer of "top models" like the Brazilian Gisele Bündchen and the American Cindy Crawford, among others. In the beginning of their careers, other "top models" like Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Alessandra Ambrosio, Linda Evangelista, Elsa Benitez, Heidi Klum, Stephanie Seymour, Iman and Daniela Pestova, belonged to the staff of his agency. In 1979, he founded the John Casablancas Modeling Centers. These modeling and training Centers became a source of talent throughout the United States, Canada, México, Colombia, Perú, the Dominican Republic and Italy. Close to 50 John Casablancas & Career Centers are in operation. He was the father of Julian Casablancas, lead singer of the band The Strokes, and was married to Brazilian model Aline Casablancas.
