Alonzo E. Harshman was born near Mulberry on January 15, 1856, the son of Henry C. and Kate (Shockey) Harshman, the eldest of the children. On March 6, 1889, he was married to Lucinda C. Potter, of Illinois; she passed away on February 1, 1935, at the family home. Two children were born to this union, Myrtle Harshman Thompson, a teacher, and Dr. Lewis Harshman, of Fort Wayne. His first home was near Mulberry, but in 1897, Mr. Harshman established his home for his family in Washington township, just west of Jefferson.
Besides a grandson, Samuel L. Thompson, who has just returned from Colorado, other survivors are: a sister, Mrs. Fairfax Grice, who lived on an adjoining farm for nearly forty years; three brothers, Harry and Richard Harshman of Mulberry, and Albert Harshman of Chinook, Mont., and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Mrs. Lettie Mercer and Mrs. Kate Ayers, and one brother, B. Frank, preceded him in death.
Early in life he was a member of the Mulberry Methodist Episcopal church, but after moving to near Jefferson, he affiliated with the Jefferson United Brethren church.
The last rites will be held at 2:30 o'clock, Saturday afternoon at the Jefferson U. B. church, with Rev. Regenos officiating. Burial will be in the Jefferson cemetery.
