William was born in Jackson Township, Ohio, son of Ezra W Read and Polly (Jones) Read. In 1850 the family lived in District 184, Ashland, Ohio. At age 18, W. H. Read enlisted in Company I of the 8th Reg. of US Volunteers, enlisted by Captain Richard Allen, the 10th of August, 1861. He is described as 5'8 1/2 ", light complexioned, blue eyes and light hair.
In September, 1861, William suffered a gunshot wound of the right forearm at New Creek, VA. According to his records, he "was disabled by gun shot wound in my right arm caused by the accidental discharge of my musket which occurred under the following circumstances; I had been on picket duty and it was a rainy night. I set my musket against the fence, got over, reached hold of my gun to lift it over and by some means, the cock struck a rail, and the gun was discharged."
He was treated at Cumberland Hospital, there to Wheeling, VA.
William Read reenlisted in Co. E, 2nd Regiment, Ohio Artillery June 17, 1863 and was discharged August 23, 1865.
William married Sarah Ann Harbaugh in 1866 in Ohio. Read and his family lived in Ohio, Michigan, Geneva,NE, Aromas, CA, and Soquel, CA.
William and Sarah had 6 children: Ezra L., William Arthur, Gilbert Harvey, Eva Ione, Edna Mabel, and Garfield Chester.
Will Read was active in the GAR.
Read died 14 Dec., 1928 at the age of 85.
