Enlisted in US Army on May 26, 1898, in Troop CC, Cavalry, Brooklyn NY. Transferred to Troop C, NY Volunteer Cavalry in the Spanish American War (1898). Participated in the Puerto Rico Campaign and saw combat at Coamo, PR. Discharged from volunteer service on Nov. 25, 1898 in Brooklyn, NY.

Married Kojema O. Yomie.

Father of Jessie Montgomery.

A cenotaph for him appears in the Soong Ching-ling Memorial Park. There is no historic evidence that he was relocated to that site.
