He was the husband of Dianne (Gomes) Lopes with whom he shared 49 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Freetown, the son of the late Edwin and Jennie (Gonsalves) Lopes, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Mr. Lopes was formerly employed as a correctional officer with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections for 20 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed watching all Boston sports teams as well as Notre Dame.
Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Michael Lopes and his partner Nancy Cardoso of Fall River and Robert Lopes, Jr. and his wife Sarah of Berwyn, PA; a brother, Edwin Lopes, Jr. of Freetown; 2 sisters, Sheila Lopes of Freetown and Rev. Sandra Echevarria, Pastor of New Life Pentecostal Church, of New Bedford; 4 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Elaine Lopes.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at 9:30 AM in the New Life Pentecostal Church, 789 Main St., Acushnet. Burial will follow in the Acushnet Cemetery.
