Lt. Charles F. Spivey was a pilot of F4U Corsairs in VMF-122, 2nd MAW, FMF, a Marine Fighter Squadron. Beginning in October of 1944, when Lt. Spivey was KIA, this unit was flying ground support missions from an airstrip on the island of Peleliu in Palau. He received the Purple Heart.
Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington was a well-known Marine ace in command of VMF-122 in 1943. He was shot down in January of 1944 and remained a Japanese POW the rest of the War. He inspired the television series "Baa Baa Black Sheep" (1976-1978).
