Brig. Gen Shuford Hazel Centerville, GA. Brig. Gen. Shuford M. (Sam) Hazel, USAF (Ret.) passed from this life on July 14, 2013 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Vicksburg, MS on March 15, 1944, Sam was predeceased by his parents, S. M. Hazel, Sr. and Jeanette Mayerhoff Hazel.Sam was a graduate of Mississippi State University, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He later earned both a law degree and a Master's degree in Business Administration. Devoting 33 years to the service of his country in the U.S. Air Force and the Air National Guard, Sam retired as a Brigadier General. After military retirement, Sam worked for over a decade as a consultant in aerospace operations and logistics. An avid fly fisherman, Sam was most at home on the water in the company of the friends he considered his brothers.Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth ("Betty") Fair Hazel; daughters Amy (Trey) Franklin of Dallas, TX, and Sarah (Carl) Hearn of Vicksburg, MS; grandchildren Carter, Katie and Spencer Franklin; Adison, Cara Beth and Samuel Hearn.The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Fred Schnell, Dr. Kim Johnston, and the entire staffs of Central Georgia Cancer Care, Georgia Neurosurgical Institute, Central Georgia Radiation Oncology, and Heart of Georgia Hospice for their professionalism, devoted care and kindness. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins. A private memorial service is planned for a later date.
